Our history

1985
Child Abduction and Custody Act 1985. This Act introduced the domestic legislation which brought into effect the Hague and European Conventions governing international child abduction.

1989
Children Act 1989 | Royal Assent 16 November 1989. Far reaching legislation concerning children and families. The 1989 Act introduced, the welfare of the child is paramount. This means the only concern of the court is what is best for the child. The concept of parental responsibility replaced parental rights. It introduced children being parties in any court proceedings, separate from their parents. The 1989 Act also placed a duty on local authorities to identify and protect children in need.

1996
Family Law Act 1996– Important legislation which enabled a person to obtain an injunction from the court to protect from domestic abuse. Two injunctions available under the Family Law Act

1996: non-molestation orders and occupation orders.

2002
Adoption and Children Act 2002. This Act restated and amended the law relating to adoption. The Act also introduced special guardianship orders, a new legal status for non-parents who are caring for or wish to care for children in a long term, secure placement whilst preserving the legal link with the child’s natural birth parents.

2012
Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 – This Act brought about fundamental changes in the arrangements for obtaining access to justice and civil litigation costs

2016 – Charles Paulin & Co. incorporates St Luce & Co. and continue to provide quality legal services.

The Lord Chancellor, instructed the Master of the Rolls, Lord Woolf, to report on options to consolidate the existing rules of civil procedure.

Civil Procedure Rules apply to all civil cases commenced after 26 April 1999

2005
Mental Capacity Act 2005 – An Act designed to protect and empower individuals who may lack the mental capacity to make their own decisions about their care and treatment.

2016
In June 2016 more than 30 million voted in historic European Union referendum, with 51.9% voting to leave the union and 48.1% opting to remain.
